What makes a reader rate a book high? ....or low?

Something I think authors are always curious about is the thought process readers go through when they decide whether to rate a book a 5 or a 3 or a 2... or not at all! What does it all mean? Because Reader A loved my book and rated it a 5--and really stroked my ego in the process--why would Reader B rate it a 2? And now, does that mean that Reader A was only being nice, and that I really suck as an author? Or, does it mean that Reader B just didn't "get" my book?

What does it all mean????

What it might mean, is that Reader B, or Reader C, who ranked your book low, out of handfuls of positive reviews, might not be your target audience. John Locke talks about this in his new book, How I Sold 1 Million eBooks in 5 Months! Maybe Reader B and C picked up the book because they thought it was something they would like, and then, well no.... they didn't. But Reader A? And all of the others? Cool beans, figure out what makes them click with your writing and maybe you're onto something.

This winter in my corner of Kentucky has seemed longer and dimmer than usual. For the last week, we've had flash food and severe thunderstorm watnings, which means I've only got when it was necessary.
This morning, I woke up to a strange light outside my window. Snapping on the TV, I finally learned that it was ... sunshine.
Oh, yeah. I remember that. Warm, inviting, yep, sunshine.
Which, of course, tempts me to skip outside and play. And I would, except I'm too excited about my next book with TMP, "Bittersweet."
Set in Ohio right after the Civil War, this romantic suspense is one of my very favorite creations. If I could find a man like Coulter, the hero, I'd be married in a heartbeat. And while he does have his flaws, his love for his sister and his need to protect the strange woman who literally falls at his feet make him something special indeed.

Kitty Carter is used to getting into strange situations when she chases her cat, Arther. But this latest escapade is just too much! When Arther chases a mouse at the marina while she's doing research for her book, she follows him down the dock and onto a yacht. Not entirely her plan, since she falls down some stairs and hits her head, and wakes to find herself out to sea. And she and Arthur aren’t the only ones on board!

She was just trying to catch Arthur, she never meant to fall down the steps and knock herself out…

This author must own cats herself. She understands all too well feline wiles and how they can manipulate you. Ms. Hartman also has a sense of humor. It makes her story fun to read.

Her characters are both busy people who live alone. He’s married to his work; she was jilted at the altar. When they meet in the galley of the boat after her fall, neither one is looking forward to spending two weeks together. Unfortunately they are well at sea by the time she wakes up and he has to deliver the boat to Hawaii within a certain time frame. She decides leaving Alaska behind to spend some time in the sun in Hawaii might not be a bad thing.

Ms. Hartman names the cat Arthur. The male character is also an Arthur, which creates some comic confusion. When he suggests they call the cat “kitty”, she objects because her name is Kitty! There are several other scenes that will make you smile as they try to adjust to each other. It’s especially hard because he doesn’t like cats…

The story is well paced and keeps your interest. It’s fun to watch the characters try to avoid the attraction between them. The author drew me into her story easily and I enjoyed watching the antics of the cat and the people both. I found this to be a very good read, why not get yourself a copy and try it?

Hello, all you TMP readers! Roxie Turner here. I’m the heroine of Bobbye Terry’s series, The Briny Bay Mysteries. He-he, Trixie, my sister just slapped me on the back. She can’t talk; she has laryngitis. They say that the evil you do comes back ten Spades, and now I’m making sure the old adage happens. You see, she loved lording over me a week ago when we were at Bobbye’s Beach Party to celebrate the launch of Buried on Briny Bay, my first mystery novella. Okay, Trixie (sigh) if you say so. Folks, this is Trixie Frye, co-heroine of the Briny Bay Mysteries.

If you have an older sister, you’ll understand that sometimes it just doesn’t pay to argue. Pick your arguments is what I always say. Now where was I? Oh yeah, in my first mystery, I, that is WE, are thrown into crime fighting when my life-long nemesis, Georgia Collins is found buried on the town’s landfill. She always said she was going to be cremated, not buried. Now I know it’s not nice to speak badly of the dead, but I swear, no more fitting thing could have happened to that Bi--- Witch.

You see, things were complicated by the fact I had told just about everyone I was going to murder her. I even kept an elaborate list of ways to kill her off. Who knew someone would use those same methods of murdering not just Georgia, but a bunch of other people who were all related to her in some manner?

That was a heck of a murder to solve too, because I kept, that is WE kept getting thrown in the slammer. Who knew you could get jailed by walking down the street and eating Veal Parmesan at an Italian restaurant.

Oh, for crying out loud, Trixie just handed me a note and said, I’d talked enough, so let me end by saying I’d appreciate it of you’d help Bobbye out and buy a copy of her book. She gets so distraught when folks don’t enjoy what she writes. Also, Trixie and I are up to our necks again in mayhem in a just a couple of months. Watch out for Book 2, The Marriage Murders.

I fell for all of them. The two main characters were so emotionally connected it was impossible NOT to believe in a happily-ever-after. I will admit, however, that the ending was handled in such an amazing way that I was both surprised and thrilled. Ms. Scarbrough has become one of my favourite authors. I am automatically drawn to anything with her name on it.

Ms. Scarbrough has a way of involving sensuality without going in-depth so that younger readers cannot enjoy the book. While the sexuality was evident, the entire book was mildly sensual. It did not lose its spunk. I highly recommend this book to anyone. I promise you will love this book as well as this author.

When I was a kid, I got really, really tired of grown-ups telling me to enjoy being young, that someday I'd wish I was a kid again.

Well, I'm there. I am now a lady of a certain age and I can feel the breeze as the moments whiz past me, one after another, reminding me that life is finite and I have more years behind me than ahead of me.

Not that I'm depressed, of course. My mother was 25 when I was born and she is quite hale and hearty. And since I've always been told I'm just like my mother, I figure I've got a good quarter-century to go. And I do intend to make the best of it.

My kids think I'm kidding when I say I intend to die in bed, in the arms of a young lover, and let them deal with the scandal of it all. Now, come on, wouldn't that be great? I guarantee if I go that way, the generations to come will hear the story of Great-Grandmother Cat, which is better than only being remembered when they happen to see my tombstone in the cemetery.

When you're a kid, the days stretch before you, long and blissfully empty, so you can make up your own adventures. The hay loft in our old barn served as a pirate ship deck and a pioneer cabin; the fallen leaves in the front yard were raked by us into the "walls" of houses.

The trouble with being an adult is that you're expected to do Things That Matter. I can't spend an afternoon picking up rocks and rolling down hills; there's laundry and dishes to wash and bills to be paid. I'm not allowed to gather up a bunch of my friends for a pick-up basketball game. No, I have to go to work and go to choir practice at church and sweep and mop.

So I've decided I don't want to be a big girl anymore. I want to take my favorite stuffed animal to bed at night and not be laughed at. I want to eat ice cream for breakfast and stay up way past my bedtime watching old karate movies.

I suspect that Elise, the heroine in "Kentucky Blues," feels a little that way, too. And like Elise, I'm heading back to my mama's house, too. No, she doesn't have a sexy younger man living with her ... but she does have a wonderful knack for feeding me the familiar dishes I adore and letting me be her little girl again, if only for a few days.

What more could she want, really?

Nothing that she will admit, anyway. And let's not even think about that brief escape to Gatlinburg several months back when she had separated from her then-husband, Cliff. Or the fact that the man ran off with her little sister while they were, um, estranged. And let's definitely not bring to light that she'd never really revealed to anyone in the small town of Legend what exactly had happened between her and Cliff.

Or the fact that while she was off "finding herself" and "losing her husband" at the same time, she sort of, well, had a fling. But never mind about that, because "the fling" is long gone and likely doesn't even know where to find her. Besides, he was trouble.

And just when Suzie thinks all is well, Mr. Trouble rides up to her B&B doorstep on a bad-ass Harley and tosses her perfect little world into some kind of big, bad tumble.

Chapter One

“I’ll take it.”

“You understand the deal is as is.”

Brad Matthews nodded. “I understand.” He looked up at the decaying and dilapidated structure and wondered what it was like in its hey day. Although he hated to tear it down, that was exactly what he was going to do. “The land is worth the asking price.”

“What will you do with it?” Martin McClain, the realtor he’d been working with, studied him from the side.

“I have a plan.”

Martin harrumphed. “Others have had plans, too. I assume you have the financing for renovation?”

He assumed correct. Brad suddenly had financing for just about anything he wished.

“Yes.” His answers were intentionally vague. These small town types, you never knew what they would keep confidential or pronounce in the coffee shop for the whole town to chew on.

That was the last thing he wanted, or needed: the whole town of Legend, Tennessee, all six-thousand-plus of them, chewing on his business.

No way. Not until he was good and ready.

“Lake Lodge is pretty special to the folks around here.” Brad figured it was. Figured he’d also have a fight on his hands when they learned what he wanted to do with old Lake Lodge.

“Pretty special to me.” Brad left it at that and turned to Martin.

“How soon can we close?” Martin rubbed his chin with his forefingers.

“Your loan is secure. The sellers are motivated. I’d say any time in the next few days. Let’s sign the paperwork and I’ll get it to their agent.” He nodded and let a slow, languid grin spread across his face.

“What else needs to be done?”

Martin studied him. “Well, for starters while you are here in town, I’d check with zoning, a local contractor or two, temporary utilities, et cetera.”

Good idea. It would keep him busy while he was waiting to take possession. Get the details out of the way so he could get to work.

He nodded. “Sounds like a plan.”

Martin thrust out his hand to shake Brad’s. “Good dealing with you, Mr. Matthews. Got a place to stay while you are in town?”

For the first time since his arrival in Legend, a hint of trepidation skipped down his spine. Slowly, Brad angled his gaze toward Legend Lake and across the expanse of water. It was the same view Lake Lodge boasted of in old brochures, the one that forty years ago drew tourists to the mountains and the lake in droves.

And if he had anything to do with it, they would return in droves again.

His eyes rested far across the lake on a moderate-sized clapboard home that sat nestled in a young cove of trees bordering the lake’s edge.

“Yes. With any luck, I will have a place to stay.” He turned to Martin and shook his hand. “Thank you, Mr. McClain. I’ll give you a call in the morning.”

Martin headed toward his older model Jeep. The guy was going to enjoy the commission he’d make from the sale. Well, good for him. He imagined the guy could use the money. Might as well let his inheritance contribute to the local economy. Turning, he eyed his newest toy—a brand spankin’ new, baby-blue Harley Davidson Dyna—and swung a leg over the warm leather seat. Felt good to be in the saddle. In control. Two dreams coming true. A hog of his own and becoming his own boss real, real soon.

He was a man with a plan; knew exactly what he wanted. But there was one more piece of his plan to accomplish, and he would work on that one, next.

He kicked the bike into gear and the rumble broke the mountain calm. As he spun out, he wondered what the locals were going to think when other rumblings broke the silence of the small town.

Like dynamite blasting a hole in the side of their favorite mountain.

Location, Location, Location

In the spring of 1999, Margaret, a spinster from Illinois, went on a business trip that spurred the adventure of a lifetime.

She wasn’t supposed to go to California that year. One of her co-workers was scheduled for the trip, but had to bow out due to family conflicts. In Newport Beach fate stepped in. Margaret’s business card was pulled from a hat, and she was awarded a trip to yet another conference.

Fast forward to the fall of 1999.... Our heroine boards a plane at O’Hare bound for Washington, D.C. Over six hundred miles away, a dark eyed man boards a plane in Little Rock, Arkansas and takes off in the same direction. Their gazes meet across a stuffy conference room in Virginia and... Oh no!

True story.

At thirty, I was the last of my friends to find a special someone, but I wasn’t pining away. I embraced my spinsterhood. I had my family and my friends, a career, an apartment of my own, and money in the bank to do as I pleased.

You often hear tales of people who find love right under their nose, but it doesn’t always happen that way. By the end of the week in Virginia, I knew I had met THE ONE.

Oh God, he was sweet. How could I resist those big, bittersweet chocolate eyes? And the drawl! Not the twangy, annoying kind, but the soft, slow slurring of syllables that was just enough to make a northern girl melt into a puddle of goo....

Now, I will admit I wasn’t exactly pleased with this turn of events. Falling hard and fast for a stranger seven hundred miles away from home was not part of my plan. It was supposed to be a harmless flirtation. Some laughs, a few stolen kisses, a little excitement to break up the monotony of eight hours of seminars each day over the course of five long days.

I knew right away I was in trouble. I also knew deep down in my heart that resistance was futile.

Sometimes we get lucky and fall in love with the guy or girl next door – or almost-almost-next-door. In my novel, Paramour, Camellia Stafford finds love at her fingertips. Literally.

What could be more convenient than having a hunky ghost of Frank DeLuca haunting the light fixture above your bed? Okay, admittedly the whole ghost thing throws a wrench into the works - but lucky Cam! She also has handsome Brad Mitchum from two doors down trying to win her heart.

But we can’t all be that lucky. Sometimes love can be terribly inconvenient. I didn’t want a long-distance relationship. I couldn’t imagine leaving my family and friends behind and moving to Arkansas. I was terrified by the prospect of becoming a step-mother. But I plunged in anyway, and what an adventure it’s been!

In my short story, Concourse Christmas, Ellie Nichols is a girl from Chicago who runs a hotel in Little Rock. Jack Rudolph is an FBI agent born and raised in Florida, but living and working in Oklahoma City. They meet when they’re stranded at St. Louis’ Lambert International Airport by a Christmas Eve snowstorm, and feel the same undeniable tug.

Now, Jack and Ellie must learn the same lessons I took to heart once upon a time.

Long-distance love affairs are intense and intoxicating. Everything moves in double time. Time together is relegated to long weekends crammed into packed schedules. Hours are spent burning up the phone lines, mining every tiny detail of each other like diamonds. Far less time is spent necking on the couch and extra effort must be expended to make the relationship work.

Falling in love means taking a chance, but if you’re lucky, really and truly lucky, the reward far outweighs the risk. I should know. I am an extremely lucky woman.

I’ve said it myself—anyone can publish a book in today’s publishing world. It’s true. That statement is also a misnomer.

You can publish. There are dozens of options from which to choose. The key, however, is to publish well, to publish often, and publish to sell.

So how do you do that? Whether you choose to self-publish, or publish with a small independent press, there is work to do. The notion of dashing off a book, piecing together an adequate cover, and uploading to the first retailer you see might sound like a cool and fun thing to do—but don’t do it. Your book deserves time and attention, and requires a great deal of effort and planning on either your, or your publisher’s (or both!) part.

Looking for Mr. Right Enough

As a widow lady of a certain age, I am quite content with my life. I'm not searching for a replacement husband or a gentleman companion, that archaic phrase that has become the modern "friends with benefits."

I am not, however, opposed to meeting Mr. Right. Or, more accurately, Mr. Right Enough.

I love creating sexy, bad boy heroes in my books (check out "Kentucky Blues" and "No Safe Place", those to-die-for guys who make their ladies swoon. Real life, however, is vastly different than fantasy. Although my taste runs to tall, dark, lean and handsome, what I really need is a man with a hammer. And a set of sockets.

My late sister once said that the only tools a girl needs are a butter knife, a high-heeled shoe and the phone number of a good mechanic. She really meant it; I watched her pound a nail in the wall with a shoe heel more than once and she's right, a butter knife can suffice for a screwdriver nearly all the time.

I love my house, a bungalow built in the 1930s, but it suffers from old house syndrome. Little things keep going wrong and, alas, none can be fixed with a stiletto or kitchenware.

Like the little drip beneath my bathtub. Right now, I've got a small towel tucked in the right place to protect my ceiling, since the bathroom is above my living room, but I suspect that's not the plumber-recommended remedy. Mr. Right Enough could take care of that in minutes, I'm sure.

And then there are my cars. I have two of them, one a 1994 model and one a 1996. I do have a good mechanic, but he's not around on the weekends.

Mr. Right Enough could be. He could show up, toolbox in hand, and tighten up that squeaky fan belt or the battery terminals that keep the car from stopping.

I know that newspaper ads are now passe, so I guess I'll have to rely on the internet to find my man. So let's hope when I hook up to one of those dating sites, the first response will be from a guy with mad fix-it skills who's looking for an independent woman who likes to cook and is perfectly happy letting him watch sports for hours while she sneaks away to write.

"Well, my girl, you’ve done it, now!" Brid O’Donnell’s efficient voice sliced through the stillness inside the cheese barn, sharp as a knife through curd.

Meaghann Power straightened, wiped milk-spattered palms on her white apron, and turned to face her aunt. No secret remained long in the village, but the speed with which this particular news had traveled surprised even her. "What have I done, Aunt Brid?" she began.

Arms akimbo, the stout middle-aged woman loomed in the open doorway in a dripping yellow mackintosh. She smoothed wisps of rain-dampened hair from her eyes as moisture pooled beneath her on the barn’s concrete floor. Aunt Brid’s usually set features tightened into a disapproving frown. Outside the barn door, Ireland’s continual rain misted the hillside and ran in rivulets, forming a lake in the driveway.

Meaghann plunged her hands into the sink’s soapy water and groped for the wooden paddle floating on the surface. Please God, not another lecture. She drained the suds and refilled the sink, staring at her work-roughened hands. A paraffin heater in the corner hissed as a drop of water landed on its black enameled surface. Above her a string of incandescent bulbs cast a golden glow over the paint-peeled ivory walls.

"Done?" the older woman snapped. "You invite a single man to live with you, then act as if it’s nothing!" Brid’s voice rose several decibels. "The decent people of the parish won’t be seeing it that way, and neither do I. It’s not seemly for a single woman and a strange man to be livin’ together," Brid clucked. "This sort of carry-on may happen in Dublin, but not in Timnagh. And not in my own family." She punctuated her remark with an irate shake of her head.

Caught by a gust of wind, the door behind Brid creaked on its hinges, and Meaghann stepped to the threshold and wrenched it closed. Only then did she face her aunt. "We won’t be ‘living together’. He’s renting the keep. And he’s not a stranger. The Lawlors came from the village."

Brid gave a humph, then moved to the dusty corner where the heater glowed. "Hardly! They left thirty-five years ago. Besides, you know nothing about him. If you’d come to your senses and take Seamus, you’d not be struggling to run this farm by yourself."

Meaghann stiffened her jaw. Didn’t she have the Devil’s own troubles trying to keep the place from falling to bits around her without her aunt determined to foist onto her every available man under seventy? With a sigh, she lifted the washed utensils from the sink onto a towel. "Aunt Brid, the truth of the matter is, I don’t want to marry Seamus. I— " She paused, not waiting to give thought to her reluctance, then plunged on. "I...don’t want to marry anyone—least of all Seamus." She’d wanted to marry once, but that was a long time ago. Then she could afford to dream, now.... Her jaw tightened and she picked up another utensil. Now there was just today, and an endless stream of work, which never quite got done.

Brid’s heavy arms criss-crossed her ample bosom. Ginger brows furrowed as she spoke. "The way I see it, you’ve little choice. I hate to remind you, but you’re growin’ no younger. Seamus is a good man, and a fine farmer."

Meaghann whirled around, her hand wielding a three-foot paddle like a sword.
"Seamus McHenry is fifty-seven years old!"

Brid snorted. "Don’t see as how you can afford to be choosey, girl. You’re goin’ on for forty yourself."

How well she knew. Noisily, Meaghann expelled her breath, at this point not caring if her frustration carried over in her voice. "You’ve been at this for the last three years. Give it up. Seamus doesn’t want a wife—he wants a mother for that brood of his. Five young ones and little Cara not out of nappies."

Meaghann turned her back on her aunt and plunged the still-damp wooden paddle into the milk curd. She gave the curds another swirl, then, satisfied the culture was working, set the paddle on a plate. "I’m managing just fine, Aunt Brid. I don’t need a husband to help me run my farm."

Bold words, she thought as she pushed the ribbed cuffs of her cardigan up her forearms. Fact was, she needed help in the worst way.

Jack Power’s daughter wasn’t one to crumble under a little adversity when keeping her farm meant everything—security, a sense of place—of continuity. She’d grown up here in Timnagh, seeing the cycle of life repeat itself again and again. She loved the welcoming acceptance a small, close-knit community offered, as well as the chance to grow old with those you loved.

But there were times when the load she carried threatened to crush her.

My Winter in Ireland

One year my husband and I decided to spend a portion of December and January in the small Waterford village of Cappoquin. We knew it was off-season. Even Liam Clancy (of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem) emailed me to say “You've picked a cold, bad time to come.” However, I was on a mission: to research a novel in progress, and I needed to speak with people away from the tourist rush that begins mid-May.

We arrived at Shannon around 9 a.m. (having left our California home at 6 a.m. the morning before to catch an early flight to JFK and then a night flight over the water to Ireland), dead tired but going on adrenaline. We got our rental car and headed in an easterly direction across the country to Tipperary Town, eventually reaching Cappoquin about three hours later.

The mews cottage we had rented was an upstairs layout in a building on a working farm. It had a tiny Pullman kitchen with a table and two chairs, a small sitting room, sparsely-but-adequately furnished with a fireplace and TV, two bedrooms and a bath. After depositing our luggage, we set out for provisions at the local SuperValu. To my surprise, the available fresh vegetables in stock consisted of cabbage, potatoes, swedes (rutabagas) and carrots. That was it! No fish (deliveries only one day a week), no salad greens. What to do? I settled for a bit of lamb and made an Irish stew which we washed down with tumblers of Guinness. After all, this was Ireland. (Our landlady had thoughtfully provided us with her own delicious brown bread which became a staple of every meal.)

But we didn't mind: we were here to sight-see and to research. I knew my heroine was Irish and was a farmer. I knew her background was Republican (the original IRA during the Irish Civil War and who opposed the Treaty of 1922), and I knew the hero was a wounded war correspondent with little use for partisan politics. After a visit to interview a local cheesemaker, I knew my heroine would be a dairy farmer. Still later, I happened to watch a program on RTE that featured women who farmed or worked in masculine occupations. One of those featured ran a farm single-handedly. Voila! I knew Meaghann could run her dairy farm and cheesemaking operation.

Near our mews cottage, the River Blackwater meandered along the smooth hills and valleys. At a picturesque spot near a bend in the river sat a converted castle keep: the perfect place for Meaghann's surly boarder, Quinn. Still farther up the Blackwater Drive was an old ruin and cemetery, the perfect place for one dramatic encounter.

Other sites found their way into my story: the shrine along the roadside, the Republican bar (where we spent an afternoon avidly listening to a couple of locals explaining things not generally shared with the tourists).

Ireland in the winter is not for everyone. Store and attraction closings are early (Most attractions are open only at the weekend or closed altogether until May). The sun begins to set around 3:30 in the afternoon. A turf fire at night is a must as it is really cold and damp in January. But the fields are emerald green, the skies, when not stormy, are filled with puffy cumulus clouds, and the roads are virtually traffic-free. We loved our sojourn, but even more, it allowed us the opportunity to add realism to In Love and War. Of all the books I've written, this remains my favorite.

"I have never read a story by this author before but I have to say she has written a beautiful and charmingly romantic story full of hope and love. When I started the story, I thought I would not like it because Amy seemed bitter and not likeable, but as I learned more about her and her situation, I really admired her. The author wrote her so realistically that you can't help but to root for her and Riley. I also liked Riley, I wish I had met someone like him, he was charming; a real gentleman. I liked the way he was patient with Toby and Amy. The comedic relief is offered by the sub-characters like Amy's father and grandmother. I enjoyed the scene where Amy's grandmother is making her own soap. I also enjoyed getting to know the town's people and experiencing small town life through Amy's eyes. The romance and chemistry between Riley and Amy is steamy; you can almost feel the sparks flying. The intimate situations are very well written and fit the story well. I think this is a great story to read at any time but especially on those days you feel down, it just give you hope that something better is always around the corner." - Ana

Good Monday morning and Happy New Year to one and all! Here is some news for this Monday, January 3, 2011.

A Father at Last is our release for this week. Jan Scarbrough dreamed of being a writer since she reported on freelance writing for a career project in the ninth grade. After majoring in English at Western Kentucky University, she taught high school English. Since 1982 she has made her living as a writer—a technical writer—but didn't have the nerve to make her novel-writing dream come true until after a life-threatening illness in 1988.

Jan is member of Romance Writers of America, has been active in her local Kentucky RWA chapter, and is a member of Novelist, Inc. She has over twenty novels in print.

Our January releases are all now posted on the home page at Turquoise Morning Press.

Starting this month, we'll list the upcoming titles for each month at the beginning of the month. This doesn't mean they will all be released at once, but you'll have the upcoming release dates. If a title should release in a format early...let's say, as a pre-order print, we'll add that link to the page as it's available. We think this will give you an idea of what's coming, and you can also read the excerpts.

A Kindle of Kittens

Between the holidays and a family member's illness, I haven't posted much lately. But, hopefully that is changing. We've all been busy with holiday gatherings, parties, and get-togethers. They're wonderful! But also, somewhat tiring and time-consuming. Too bad we can't spread them out during the whole year instead of lumped together in December.

That being said, I'm back to posting. (Obviously :)).

My husband was thoughtful enough to get me a Kindle for Christmas. He knows how much I like to read, and how quickly I can go through a book. I can buy an armload of paperbacks, and be through with them in no time. That's what my sister and I refer to as a book emergency - when you're through with your stack of books, and haven't had time to go out and buy more. Then what are you supposed to read? The back of a cereal box? Believe me, they're not that exciting. I've given it a try.

So my Kindle arrived two days ago. The set-up took longer than I expected, only because I couldn't find the password to our network. We'd changed it to something simple so we could remember it. But, of course, we couldn't. Remember it, that is...

Once that was settled, it was a breeze. Books downloaded in a flash. It still amazes me that thousands of books can fit in that thin, teeny tiny apparatus. And it looks especially fetching in its hot pink cover. I wondered if that would keep my husband from borrowing it. But so far, he still seems interested. That's okay. I don't mind sharing. :)

I found something out, though, when I was researching the Kindle. Did you know that the word "Kindle" also means a group of kittens? I was shocked. Not so much that miniature cats and an e-reader share the same name, but more because since I'm such a cat fanatic, I'd never known that before! How could that bit of feline trivia escaped me for all these years?

I also learned that the names for a group of adult cats are: clowder or cluster. Oh, and a large group of cats is a clan.

Okay, probably more information about cats than you ever wanted to know. So, I'll go back and spend some more time with my Kindle. (The e-reader, not the kittens.)
